Christmas in the Square

A festive take on the Vieux Carré, with the addition of a Cognac and a touch of port and spice.

We discovered this recipe a few years back when it was part of @MasterofMalt’s excellent #masterofcocktails series. It sounded so good that it convinced the beagle, an averred mulled wine avoider, to purchase a bottle of Professor Cornelius Ampleforth’s Christmas Mulled Cup and add it to pretty much every conceivable recipe throughout December.

This is probably its most successful application though - in the arms of a trusty old favourite – the Vieux Carré.

Christmas in the Square

25ml rye whiskey
25ml VSOP Cognac
25ml sweet vermouth
12.5ml Christmas mulled cup liqueur
dash Peychaud's bitters

Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass with cubed ice. Stir well and strain into an old fashioned glass over fresh ice. Garnish with a twist of orange peel.
